The lighthouse, first used in 1897 stands 18m high and 78m above sea level. The 1000 watt lamp runs on mains electricity (having changed from oil to diesel to mains over the last 100 years or so). Since 1986, the lighthouse has been fully automated and is monitored by a computer and Maritime NZ Staff in Wellington.
